49-åringens första uppdrag blir 2013 års upplaga av Gulfcupen, som startar i Bahrain nästa vecka. På längre sikt blir Shakirs stora utmaning att försöka kvalificera Irak till fotbolls-VM i Brasilien 2014. Just nu ligger Irak trea i sin VM-kvalgrupp, en placering som berättigar till playoffspel.
