Moscow (dpa) – The king of the Middle Eastern country of Bahrain
praised Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday for Russia‘s work
toward restoring stability to Syria, Bahrain‘s foreign minister told
reporters.

“We think that all major and influential countries should cooperate
with Russia to bring Syria back to peace and stability,” Foreign
Minister Khalid bin Ahmed al-Khalifa said after the leaders met in
the southern Russian city of Sochi, Russian state news agency TASS
reported.

Russia in September began a bombing campaign in Syria against
insurgents to support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Last week, Bahrain‘s ambassador in London said his country was
prepared to send ground troops into Syria to fight the Islamic State
terrorist group and “the brutal Assad regime,” the Reuters news
agency reported.

Bahrain‘s foreign minister on Monday shrugged off that statement,
saying the ambassador was misunderstood, TASS reported.

As symbols of their friendship, Bahrain‘s King Hamad bin Isa
al-Khalifa awarded Putin a sword made of Damascus steel, and Putin
presented the king a stallion of the Turkmen breed Akhal-Teke.

Russia and Bahrain are planning to increase economic ties, including
Russian food exports to Bahrain and cooperation involving Russian
state natural gas company Gazprom, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei
Lavrov told reporters.

Lavrov also said that the countries would develop “military
technical” ties, without specifying whether that would involve more
than the defence industry. Bahrain, an island nation in the Persian
Gulf, hosts a US naval base.
